How does a season ticket loan work?

Plain-English guide · Free financial education from OfferWise

The short answer

A season ticket loan is an interest-free loan from your employer to buy an annual travel season ticket up front. You repay it in equal monthly instalments taken directly from your salary, usually over 10 to 12 months. It costs your employer little, and it can save you a meaningful amount on commuting.

Why annual tickets are cheaper

Train and travel operators price annual season tickets at a discount — an annual ticket typically costs around the price of 40 weekly tickets, so roughly 12 weeks of travel each year come free compared with buying weekly. The catch is finding the lump sum up front: an annual ticket into a major city can cost thousands. The loan removes that barrier — your employer pays the lump sum, you repay monthly, and you keep the discount.

The fine print worth knowing

Repayments come from your net (after-tax) pay. Interest-free employer loans have no tax consequences as long as your total employer loans stay under £10,000 — which covers virtually all season ticket loans. The main thing to plan for: if you leave the job, the outstanding balance is usually deducted from your final pay, so check the policy before committing to a big annual ticket if you might move on soon.

Is it worth it?

If you commute by train, tube or bus most days, almost always yes — it's effectively a discount on travel you'd buy anyway, with the cost smoothed into monthly chunks. If you only commute two or three days a week, do the maths first: a flexi-season ticket or daily tickets may beat an annual pass.
